An employee of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in
Dar es Salaam, Bhoke Ryoba, died at Muhimbili National Hospital yesterday after
being shot by a co-worker at a get-together at a beach hotel in the city.
Temeke Regional Police Commander Engelbeth Kiondo
confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, saying police have launched
investigations into the matter. He said a 34-year-old resident of Mabibo in
Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, is in police custody in connection with the
incident.
Kiondo said Bhoke was shot by her workmate at
around 7:30 pm at the hotel where the two and colleagues whose number he would
not give were at a party.
Bhoke was immediately rushed to Muhimbili National
Hospital (MNH) but she died early yesterday, he noted, adding: “Immediately
after the incident, the suspect surrendered at Chang’ombe Police Station… We are
still interrogating him.”
Kiondo, who promised to release detailed
information on the incident today, explained that the suspect told police he
fired the pistol when trying to defend himself against thugs.
“We have dispatched a team of police officers to
the scene of the shooting for more details. We expect them to submit a report
this evening,” added the RPC.
PCCB Director General Dr Edward Hoseah confirmed
that Bhoke died from a gunshot and that police investigations were in
progress.
In a press statement issued by PCCB and signed by
public relations officer Doreen Kapwani, Dr Hoseah said they have been receiving
an avalanche of phone calls from people following the tragic incident.
“It is true that Bhoke has died from a gunshot.
Police are working on the matter,” he said.
