DIAMOND PLATNUMZ ASEMA ''AMEAGA KWAO''

GOOGLE+ PASSES TWEETER TO BE NUMBER 2 SOCIAL NETWORK

Facebook remains No. 1 with 51 per cent of internet users using the social network every month

Google+ has overtaken Twitter as the world's number two social network, according to British research firm Trendstream's Global Web Index. Google's social network attracted more than 343 million active monthly users in December, as much as 25 per cent of all internet users globally.

Facebook: 693 million monthly users, 51 percent
Google+: 343 million monthly users, 25 percent
Twitter: 288 million monthly users, 21 percent
YouTube: 280 million monthly users, 21 percent

By way of comparison, Twitter was used by 288 million people in December, or 21 per cent of all internet users. The micro-blogging service's reach grew by 40 per cent from June 2012, according to the index.

YouTube also saw big growth, virtually tied with Twitter at 280 million monthly users. Google's integrated platform likely helped drive users to both of the company's social networks, letting users access both sites with a single sign-on.

Facebook remained at the top of the internet heap, with 693 million active monthly users, or 51 per cent of the world's total internet users. The social network says it has approximately 1 billion total users.

Not every social network grew, however. Regional networks like China's Weibo, RenRen and Qzone saw their monthly user bases shrink as much as 50 per cent. Trendstream tracks 8 different social networks that operate only in China, each capturing over 5 per cent of global online

APPLE RELEASE iOS 6.1

The first point update of iOS 6 brings support for more LTE networks as well as a movie ticket buying feature within Siri.

After five beta test versions, Apple today released iOS 6.1, the first major update to iOS 6 since it was made public in September.

The software, which went out as an over the air update, and download through iTunes this morning, brings a few new minor features, along with bug fixes.

Chief among the new features is 4G LTE support for more carriers, along with a feature that lets users purchase movie tickets from inside Siri using Fandango. Apple also returned the option for iTunes Match subscribers to download individual songs from iCloud, something that was quietly removed in a previous software release.

On the privacy side, the update also adds an option to reset Apple's advertising identifier option, the "non-permanent, non-personal, device identifier" feature added as part of iOS 6.

44 PEOPLE ARRESTED OVER MTWARA CHAOS

As the situation returned to normal in Masasi district, Mtwara Region, 44 suspects have been arrested over the chaos which erupted when a rioting group of youths clashed with police.

Mtwara Regional Police Commander ACP Mary Nzuki told a press conference here yesterday that the police in collaboration with the regional security committee are assessing the damage to the properties.

At least four people were reported killed while twelve others, including a police officer were injured.

According to the RPC, only one of the deceased has been identified.

“We are still assessing the damage caused by the rioters…I urge people to be patient, avoid taking the law into their own hands while respective organs like the police and court work on the matter,” she said.

She said 28 suspects were arrested at the scene while 16 others were arrested yesterday following a special operation launched by the police in the region. She added that all suspects are being held at the Masasi district police custody for questioning.

In the violence, eleven vehicles and other properties belonging to the Masasi District Council were set on fire.

Reports stated that motorcyclists clashed with police whent they gathered to protest against the arrest of a fellow ‘bodaboda’ driver.

During the violence, the rioting groups set fire to a court building.

They then went on to burn down the house of Masasi Urban legislator, Mariam Kassembe (CCM) and the district education office.

They also torched a number of residential houses of police officers and destroyed others before the police brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, Kigoma Urban Legislator Zitto Kabwe (Chadema) has urged the government to listen carefully to the demands raised by Mtwara residents on the gas question.

He said Mtwara residents want to know the benefits to them from the gas resource.

“The government needs to show by facts how Mtwara communities will benefit from this project. This is the biggest and most prestigious project for the country’s development. However people’s concerns needs to be addressed accordingly,” he said in a statement released yesterday.

In his six full page statement, the outspoken MP said it is high time that the government unveils the details of the construction of the pipeline.

He pointed out for example that while reports says the project will cost USD 1.2 billion, a recent statement from the ministry of Energy and Minerals says the project will cost only USD 875 million.

“The government must not turn a deaf ear or politicise the issue of Mtwara. It must re-examine itself carefully and respect people’s views to solve the situation,” he said

COURT TO RULE ON LULU'S BAIL

Elizabeth Michael, alias Lulu, who is charged with alleged manslaughter in criminal session case number 125/2012 over the death of a domestic film star, Steven Kanumba, will have her bail application worked out by the High Court Dar es Salaam zone today.
Judge Zainabu Mruke is scheduled to preside over the bail application which was filed in court by Lulu’s advocates Peter Kibatala, Kennedy Fungamtama and Fulgence Massawe.
The bail application was supposed to be heard last Friday but it was postponed until today. Friday was a public holiday.

However, no date has been so far set for hearing of the manslaughter case despite Lulu’s strong quest to press for bail.
According to the bail application, Lulu’s advocates show that they have presented the request under section 148(1) & (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act of 2002.

On the application, the advocates claim that the offence that the accused is charged with is bailable and if she is granted bail, the accused is willing and able to fulfill all conditions which the Honorable Court may deem just to impose.

The application claims that Lulu is a person of good character, reliable and is under the care of her parents who all are ready to undertake and ensure the fulfillment of the conditions, including appearing in court as and when required for the trial or for any other purpose.

The advocates claim that Lulu is a public figure and resident of Dar es Salaam and hence within the environs for easy monitoring of the fulfillment of any bail conditions.

On their affidavit, the advocates go on and claim that they were also ready to play any role to ensure that the accused duly fulfils all bail conditions, and to appear in court as and when required.

“As the applicant’s advocate, I am aware that the accused has reliable sureties who are ready to appear before the court to stand as sureties on her behalf,” said one of her advocates.

On December 21, last year, Resident Magistrate Augustina Mmbando of Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court completed the committal proceedings and transferred it to the High Court whereby the ruling of the court comes after the prosecution read the committal proceedings to the accused and claimed that they intended to call nine witnesses.

According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have committed the offence on April 7, 2012 at Sinza Vatican in Kinondoni district.

The accused, who earlier submitted that she was 17 years old and not 18 as per the charge sheet, is still in custody.

RIHANNA CRASHES KARRUECHE TRAN'S ROLLING OUT MAGAZINE COVER PARTY

Rihanna broke a myriad of social rules when she decided to crash a party for Karrueche Tran recently, which was held in honor of her Rolling Out magazine cover. Held at the Playhouse Nightclub in Hollywood this past weekend, the soiree was not coincidentally thrown by R&B singer Chris Brown, the man that both ladies have been enthralled in a love triangle with for the past few months. According to several reports, the 24-year-old Barbadian singer arrived with several of her gals and partied the night away before leaving and posing for the paparazzi outside. No word on how Karrueche handled the uninvited guest, but, ironically, she spoke about her struggles to remain graceful under pressure in her Rolling Out cover story.

“I hope people can learn from my story,” she said. “I want to be remembered as someone who remained positive through such a negative situation. Regardless of what you’re put through or what is going on in your life, keep a positive spirit. That will help you get through it. I’ve learned to find happiness within myself. I’ve also built a strong core. The past year was a big growing up process for me. I’m not saying I was immature before, but the past year, my eyes were opened to a lot of things.”

MTWARA KUMEWAKA MOTO WATU WAUAWA

Watu wauawa, majeruhi kibao, 30 mbaroni

Hata hivyo, wananchi hao hawakuweza kumuona kamanda huyo kitendo kilichowafanya

APPLE HAS SLASHED ORDERS FOR iPHONE 5 SCREENS

Apple has slashed orders for the screens used on its iPhone5 because of weak sales while arch-rival Samsung has sold its 100 millionth Galaxy S device, in a sign of changing fortunes in the mobile market.

The iPhone maker has almost halved its order of liquid-crystal display panels from key suppliers, according to the Japanese newspaper the Nikkei.

Apple has told three suppliers, Japan Display, Sharp and LG Display, that it requires fewer screens, after previously requesting as many as 65 million units for the January to March quarter. Japan Display’s plant in Nomi, a key iPhone supplier, is expected to reduce output temporarily by between 70% and 80%, compared with the October to December period.

The iPhone5 is longer and lighter than previous models, but consumers have been underwhelmed and there have been glitches, notably the flawed maps function.

Apple has dominated the smartphone market with iPhone since its launch in 2007, but Samsung has caught up in recent years, following the launch of the Galaxy S series in May 2010. Last year, the latest model, the Galaxy S III, helped the South Korean firm to leapfrog its US rival to become the world’s top-selling smartphone manufacturer.

Sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S series have reached 100 million in under three years — faster than Apple’s iPhone, which took nearly four years.

Apple’s share price has tumbled by a quarter since September when iPhone5 debuted. In contrast, Samsung’s shares powered to a new record last week.

Both companies are benefiting from the mobile boom as consumers prefer smartphones and tablets to the traditional desktop or personal computer. Research firm Gartner reported today that global sales of PCs slumped 5% in the last three months, to 90.3 million. Gartner said the launch of “compelling low-cost tablets” — such as the Google Nexus and Amazon Kindle Fire — was helping to drive the shift from PC to tablet

JUSTINE BIEBER IS DAYS AWAY FROM DROPPING ''BELIEVER''

Justin Bieber is days away from dropping Believe Acoustic, but fans are getting an early taste of what's on the January 29 album.
On Friday (January 25), Bieber teased fans with the release of a live, acoustic version of "As Long As You Love Me," where he's joined by guitarist Dan Kanter, who co-produced the acoustic release with Bieber.
A couple of the tracks have also leaked ahead of the album's official street date, and given what Bieber is singing about, the album is bound to get some buzz. The songs do address some of the pitfalls of fame and growing up in the public eye. "Yellow Raincoat" is a rather mature-sounding slow jam that sounds an awful lot like a John Mayer ballad, with the focus on Bieber's deeper voice and acoustic guitar."
The song not only seems to address relationship strife, but also all kinds of personal drama tied to celebrity. During the track, he croons, " 'Cause the fame, and the money, and the girl will drive you crazy/ Another he-said, she-said I'm thinking maybe/ Just put on... I'll put on my raincoat, my yellow raincoat/ Baby it's keeping me dry."
It's not the only track that Bieber is waxing philosophical on. "Nothing Like Us" is also a ballad, with the focus this time solely on a breakup.
The piano-driven slow jam and the opening lines will certainly have people talking. He sings, "Lately I've been thinking/ Thinking about what we had/ I know I was hard/ It was all that we knew/ Have you been drinking to take all the pain away?/ I wish I could give you what you deserve."
"Nothing Like Us" and "Yellow Raincoat" are two of the never-before-released tracks on the album. "Nothing Like Us" was produced and written solely by Bieber, while he got some help from Tom Strahle on "Yellow Raincoat." "I Would" is the other new track to make the acoustic cut.
The leaks haven't been confirmed by Bieber, but ahead of the release he did let his fans know on Twitter that this album would get real. He tweeted earlier this week, "now #6DAYS until i answer all the questions - #BELIEVEacoustic."

JUSTINE TIMBERLAKE REUNITE WITH TI FOR NEW MUSIC

Now that our long wait for new music from Justin Timberlake is officially over and his new "Suit & Tie" single is breaking records, it's only a matter of time before we get our hands and ears on his brand-new full-length album, The 20/20 Experience.
So who else will be involved in Timberlake's passion project? Well, "Suit & Tie" producer Timbaland will likely contribute to more songs (or potentially all of them, for that matter), and T.I. told MTV News that he worked on a handful of songs with Justin and Tim.
"Yeah, I spoke to JT. Me, him and Tim was on the phone," T.I. told MTV News while promoting his new movie "Identity Thief," starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. "I did a record for them at the end of last year. They were working on a record together, and I had the pleasure of assisting them on their particular record," he said, before revealing the tentative title of one of the songs. "I think it's called 'Goodbye Homey,' one of them is, and then there is another one; I did maybe two or three records with them."
T.I. and Timberlake first collaborated on "My Love," from 2006's FutureSex/LoveSounds. Tip is just as excited as fans are about the new direction of Justin's music, as evidenced by "Suit & Tie." "It's just great that he's back into doing music. The record he has out with Jay right now is phenomenal," he said of "Suit & Tie." "It was definitely a sound that was missed."
The rapper/actor didn't go into too many specifics of his tracks with Timberlake and Timbaland but did explain the idea behind "Goodbye Homey."
"Well, 'Goodbye Homey' is really, it's saying goodbye to something that is very special to you," he said. "Not necessarily a person; it could be a time of your life, it could be an experience, it could be a relationship, it could be a friend that's passed on. 'Goodbye Homey,' it has so many meanings and definitions. So when you hear it, you absorb it, and then whatever it means to you is what we intended."
Now we'll just have to wait and see if "Goodbye Homey" or any other T.I. collabos end up on The 20/20 Experience. The album doesn't have a release date just yet, but Timberlake promised it would drop this year — and the fact that he just booked a Super Bowl weekend gig could mean we'll see it sooner than later.
Are you excited for more music from Justin and T.I.? Let us know in the comments!

50 Cent's 'Major Distribution' Video: Where Did That MMG Chain Come From?

'I thought it would be unexpected,' Fif tells MTV News, avoiding rumors that it came from the BET Hip Hop Awards scuffle between G-Unit, Maybach.

A scene from 50 Cent's "Major Distribution" videoFrom his unforgettable G-Unit spinner to his current Street King pendant, 50 Cent has a thing for flashy jewelry. Usually the outspoken rap star uses his chains to help brand his own camp, but in his latest video for "Major Distribution," there is a brief cameo from a Rick Ross-styled Maybach Music Group chain.
So how did a piece promoting Fif's biggest rival end up in the final cut?
"It came from a jeweler. Jewelers, they made it. Yeah, we got it and ended up putting it in the video," the G-Unit juggernaut explained Thursday. "That's what rappers do: Rappers put jewelry in videos."
Fif is right: Diamond-encrusted jewels have long been a staple in most rap videos, but not when the piece belongs to someone you've gone through a much-publicized battle with. "I thought it would be unexpected, like when you see A$AP with a Death Row hat on. It's cool it's interesting. You look and say, 'Wait, something is out of place,' " 50 reasoned, referencing A$AP Rocky's "Long Live A$AP" music video, in which he sports a Death Row hat even though he has no business connection to the storied label.
It would've been easy to assume that the MMG chain was the same one that came up missing after the BET Hip Hop Awards scuffle between Gunplay and members of 50's G-Unit camp last year. Shortly after the incident, a viral video of 50 wearing the chain while bowling surfaced online.
The "I Get Money" MC didn't address that situation outright, chalking it all up to talk and blog fodder. "Rumors today, you can't believe everything you hear on the Internet," he said. "It's crazy."
Outside of the small controversy, 50's "Major Distribution" is a street-laced single from his upcoming Street King Immortal LP. The track features Snoop Dogg and Young Jeezy, whom 50 is collaborating with for the first time. "Jeezy, that was overdue. Me and Snoop had a relationship since '03," 50 Cent said last week. "Having him work on this project, it just fit. Perfect timing."
Where do you think the MMG chain in the "Major Distribution" video came from? Let us know in the comments!

OBAMA,HOLLANDE HOLD PHONE TALKS ON MALI OFFENSIVE

WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama voiced support for France's military intervention in Mali and vowed to work with French counterpart Francois Hollande to tackle extremism across North Africa.
The two presidents discussed other "shared security concerns," including Algeria, Libya and Syria, during telephone talks, the White House said in a statement.
"The president expressed his support for France's leadership of the international community's efforts to deny terrorists a safe haven in Mali," it added.
In condemning a deadly hostage-taking operation by militants in Algeria last week, the two leaders "affirmed their mutual commitment to countering terrorism more broadly in North Africa," according to the statement.
Preliminary estimates from the Algerian authorities say 37 foreign hostages and 29 kidnappers died in an attack at the In Amenas gas field and in the military operation that followed.
Hollande also thanked Obama for his "significant support" of the effort in Mali, the White House said.
The US Air Force has deployed C-17 cargo planes to carry French troops and equipment to northern Mali, where they are trying to help flush out radical extremist fighters.
The United States also was providing intelligence to France, drawing on its network of satellites and surveillance drones.
Paris has asked Washington to help with refueling its warplanes taking part in the fight against militant fighters in Mali, but Obama's administration has yet to approve the request.
Obama and Hollande also "emphasized the need to rapidly establish" both an African-led military force in Mali and a "political roadmap that will lead to elections and restoration of democratic governance," the White House said.
The pair "condemned last week's terrorist act in Algeria," and "affirmed their mutual commitment to countering terrorism more broadly in North Africa."
Turning to Libya, in the wake of an uprising that toppled dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011, the two presidents "noted the importance of sustained assistance to Libya as it works to build effective security sector institutions," the statement added.
Hollande and Obama also spoke about Syria, "expressing their strong concern about the humanitarian crisis affecting not just Syria but also neighboring countries and reiterating their commitment to assisting the Syrian people achieve political transition to a post-Assad Syria," the statement said.
Syria's civil war has already claimed the lives of more than 60,000 people since March 2011, according to the United Nations, which has predicted that the number of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries will double to 1.1 million by June if the conflict does not end.

HAS APPLE LOST IT'S COOL TO SAMSUNG?

Samsung Electronics Co. 005930.SE -2.48% is succeeding where other technology companies have tried and failed: closing the coolness gap with Apple Inc. AAPL -2.36%
The deep-pocketed Korean company has used a combination of engineering prowess, manufacturing heft and marketing savvy to create smartphones that can rival the iPhone in both sales and appeal.

A Samsung television commercial pokes fun at Apple's iPhone.
Samsung, the market leader in smartphones, on Friday said its fourth-quarter profit surged 76% to a record high on the strength of smartphone sales, including its Galaxy S line. The latest version is considered comparable by many shoppers in both design and technical features.
Apple, meanwhile, reignited concerns about demand for its iPhone 5 after reporting flat earnings for the holiday quarter, sending its stock down 14% in the past two days. The stock has also dropped 37% since hitting an all-time high on Sept. 19, just two days before the iPhone 5 launched in stores.
At that time, Samsung had just unleashed an aggressive marketing campaign including a television commercial that poked fun at the iPhone 5. "The next big thing is already here," the spot said, referring to its Galaxy S III phone.
The ad was part of a more than $200 million U.S. marketing blitz that Samsung launched in 2011 to lampoon Apple, according to Kantar Media. The creative vision for those ads was a former Nike NKE +3.14% executive, Todd Pendleton, who now runs Samsung's marketing in the U.S.
The campaign swayed consumers including Will Hernandez, an Apple iPhone owner who bought a Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone about three months ago after seeing Samsung's ads.
"If you see this stuff on TV enough, it gets you thinking," said Mr. Hernandez, a 34-year-old resident of Somerville, Mass., who adds that he likes how his Galaxy has a larger screen than the iPhone. "Now, when someone gives me an iPhone to look at a picture, it looks so tiny."
The marketing onslaught is helping Samsung widen the gap as the market leader. Samsung is estimated to have held 28% of the global smartphone market last year, up from 20% a year earlier, according to IHS iSuppli. Apple's share, meanwhile, isn't rising as quickly, moving to 20.5% in 2012 from 19% a year earlier.
Despite Samsung's advances, Apple generates higher revenue and its profit in the latest quarter was twice as large as Samsung's. And even after its stock slump, Apple's market value of $413 billion is nearly double Samsung's $217 billion market cap.
A Samsung spokesman in Seoul declined to make executives available. An Apple spokeswoman declined to make executives available for interviews, but reiterated recent comments by Chief Executive Tim Cook. Mr. Cook has said Apple is "unwilling to cut corners in delivering the best customer experience in the world."
While many analysts agree that Samsung isn't as innovative as Apple in terms of design and software capability, it has been able to match other electronics companies' products at a cheaper price.
Samsung's high-end smartphones are priced similarly to their iPhone counterparts in the U.S. But Samsung's devices have been significantly discounted at times, to less than a quarter of the sticker price in some cases.
Samsung owns its own manufacturing facilities where it builds screens, chips and other parts, allowing it to cut costs to make smartphones in a way that few other manufacturers can. Apple designs its own devices and some of the technologies it uses, but it relies on other companies, including Samsung, to help build its iPhones.
At the same time, the Korean electronics maker has capitalized on what Apple wasn't doing in the smartphone market. Even as Apple stuck to one new model each year with a narrow price band, Samsung released multiple smartphones in various shapes and sizes and with features such as larger screens.
Samsung was also quick to embrace Google Inc.'s GOOG -0.02% Android mobile software just as the operating system was becoming popular with consumers. That enabled the company to become the leading vendor of Android phones in the U.S.
Meanwhile, Samsung also offers feature phones based on Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT +0.90% Windows Phone software to attract consumers in low-end and emerging markets.
The result is a two-horse race in which Apple appears to be seeing iPhone sales growth slow at a time when smartphones are set to become the majority of all cellphone sales.
Samsung's surge in smartphones has caused more than just consumers to switch away from Apple. Some app developers have said they are now focusing more attention on Samsung devices.
Ken Yarmosh, chief executive of Savvy Apps in Washington, D.C., said his company began by making apps for Apple's iOS operating system but lately has been focusing on Android as Samsung devices have become more prevalent, especially among his own company's testing devices.
"There was a major flip—it was Apple, then if you have money build for Android," Mr. Yarmosh said. "Now it's Android first, or Android only."
The intense competition has led to skirmishes between Apple and Samsung. In August, a federal court sided with Apple in a fight over patents, awarding it more than $1 billion in damages and saying Samsung had infringed many of Apple's patents. The two companies are also dueling in numerous courts world-wide over various other patents, including the design of their respective devices and the wireless technology that powers them.
Apple also appears to be responding to Samsung's growth by aiming to diversify its iPhone line. The Wall Street Journal earlier this month reported that Apple is working on a lower-cost iPhone that could potentially launch later this year.
Despite the threat from Samsung, Apple still sold a record 47 million iPhones in the latest quarter, and the two largest U.S. carriers, AT&T Inc. T +0.80% and Verizon Wireless, said the majority of smartphones activated over the holidays were iPhones.
"Most people I know have iPhones," said David Barnard, founder of App Cubby, which makes utility programs for Apple devices. The iPhone's popularity is not what is at question, he added, but rather that Samsung has taken a smart tack by attacking Apple's hip image. "Painting the iPhone as a passé thing is such a perfect marketing message to counteract its coolness."
Samsung executives began taking aim in 2009 after Apple began selling the iPhone in South Korea, where it briefly became the top-seller of phones in the country.
"All this time we've been paying all our attention to Nokia, NOK1V.HE -6.55% " a then-new chief of Samsung's telecom business, J.K. Shin, wrote in a memo to top executives in February 2010, which was revealed publicly last year in a trial. "Yet when our [user experience] is compared with the unexpected competitor Apple's iPhone, the difference is truly that of Heaven and Earth."
A few months later, Samsung unveiled its answer to the iPhone, the Galaxy S, an Android-based model that had several distinctive features, such as an FM radio and front-facing camera. It also had an element that would eventually become an ace up its sleeve—a bigger screen.
Apple released its iPhone 4 in mid-2010 with a new design and a front-facing camera. It far outsold the Samsung product, but the Galaxy S had made a mark and was on the radar of Apple's leaders.
In 2011, Samsung rolled out Galaxy S II and then flooded the market with smartphones. It put Galaxy S models at the high end and created four more lines—such as the Galaxy M—each with numerous models.
Samsung took another step last year by adding a new line called Note, which Samsung says is a cross between a smartphone and tablet due to its larger screen, measuring more than 5 inches diagonally. The first Note launched in October 2011 and an update came out a year later.
Samsung's latest efforts seem to be paying off, at least with consumers who aren't so loyal to Apple.
Dora Daniels, 26, of Oakland, Calif., said she learned about Samsung's latest Galaxy S III because of giant ads plastered around a downtown San Francisco transit station.
"It's silly because I don't want to be a slave to marketing but it really got into my head," said Ms. Daniels, who recently switched to the Samsung phone from an older iPhone.
